Ripon Rowel Players

Introduction

The Ripon Rowel Players are a small but active group of aspiring thespians who meet in what used to be the old tennis pavilion opposite the Spa Hotel, Park Street, Ripon. The pavilion has now become our rehearsal room which we called 'The Clubhouse'. We produce two full length plays each year trying to keep the genre as varied as possible. Venues vary - we are not fortunate enough to have a regular theatre. For many of our plays we use Allhallowgate Methodist Church Hall but since the Ripon Leisure Centre has been built, we sometimes perform in the Arts Hall which doubles as a small theatre or sports hall. Other alternatives may find us in one of the two secondary schools in Ripon.

In addition we enter the Nidderdale and District Drama Association (NDDA) Festival for one-act plays from which the winners begin the Northern area round of the All England Theatre Festival held each year. The Rowel Players has had many successes in the NDDA winning many trophies for best production, best actress, best actor. Although we've never reached the final rounds of the All England Theatre Festival, in 1998 we did manage to survive three rounds with The Dumb Waiter by Harold Pinter, produced by Audrey Hewson. Other one-act plays that have won the NDDA Festival are:
1993 Audition for a Writer by Doris M Day produced by Mike Allen
1996 One for the Road by Harold Pinter produced by Audrey Hewson
2001 Interior Designs by Jimmie Chinn - produced by Claire Cox

We also take a full part in the activities of the town, including the St. Wilfrid's Procession.
